When Kengo Kuma's building opened on 30 June 2021, most of it went underground; what surfaces is a scatter of low cylindrical pavilions with glass and latticed-timber facades and green roofs scooped like shallow bowls, set among hedges and garden paths largely open to the public. The 7,000-square-metre garden reads as a park with architecture growing out of it. For a writer whose stories keep insisting that the important thing is rarely the thing on display, it is an unusually apt piece of design.
