Photo credit Travelpleb, CC BY-SA 4.0. Hat Lek is not a town. It is a procedure with a postcode. The inventory runs to a few shacks selling food and cold drinks, possibly a guesthouse, a bank of ATMs dispensing baht and money changers in numbers that would look absurd anywhere else. On the far side is Cham Yeam, and eight kilometres beyond that the Cambodian town of Koh Kong; behind you, sixty kilometres up the coast, is Trat, the nearest Thai place with a bus station worth the name. Everybody at Hat Lek is either arriving or leaving. That is the entire economy, and it explains almost everything about the place.
