On Hatzic Prairie the water table sits close enough to the surface that it shapes everything - where you can build, where a septic field is safe, what a farm can do with its runoff. Ice made this valley: a low trough gouged southward from the foot of Stave Lake down to Hatzic Lake, about 12.5 kilometres end to end and roughly 2.5 kilometres across at its widest near Durieu. The Douglas Ranges wall it on the east, with Durieu Ridge closest and Dewdney Peak at the ridge's southern tip. Around 1,300 people live in it. They have spent a century and a half negotiating with water that arrives from the Fraser, from the mountains and from directly underfoot.
