Henichesk: Introduction

The name gives the place away. Henichesk comes from a Turkic root meaning narrow, and it describes exactly what the town watches over: a slender thread of water, the Henichesk Strait, where the Sea of Azov squeezes past to feed the Syvash lagoons beyond. In 1648 the French engineer Guillaume de Beauplan measured the passage and found it was but two hundred paces over, and fordable in calm weather. Eight years earlier the great Ottoman traveler Evliya Çelebi had noted a fortress here, Chenishke, standing guard on the shore. Everything about this small port city on Ukraine's southern coast has turned on that pinch of water, its trade, its salt, its defenses, and, again and again, its fate. It is the kind of place whose importance has never come from its size, but from exactly where it sits.
