Herrnhut: Introduction

Photo credit Mark Verma, Public domain. For a hundred years, at every hour of every day and night, somebody in this town was praying. The watch began in 1727, organised in shifts after an agreement among the residents, and it ran unbroken for a century - which is a remarkable thing for a settlement that had existed for only five years and consisted largely of people who had arrived with nothing. Herrnhut sits in Upper Lusatia, ninety kilometres east of Dresden, and it was built by refugees. The name they chose means the Lord's watchful care. Given what they had come through to get here, the emphasis was probably on the watching.
