There is a place in central North Carolina where the Yadkin River cuts through a ridge of the Uwharrie Mountains and the country opens out into a piedmont valley. In 1926 the Tallassee Power Company, a subsidiary of Alcoa, started building a dam in that gorge. By 1927 the river was backed up across 15,180 acres of bottomland and the piedmont's largest reservoir was in place. The smelter that the dam was meant to power, Alcoa's Badin Works, sat sixteen miles downstream and ran for eighty years. The smelter has been closed since 2007. The lake is still there. It has become one of the best largemouth bass fisheries in the southeast.]]></description>
