Photo credit Casiopeia, CC BY-SA 3.0. Peat cutters pulled the first pieces out of the bog around 1880 and reported none of it. Black waterlogged planks, sewn rather than nailed, shaped like nothing anyone on the island had a use for — back into the mud they went, or into the fire. Not until 1920 did word reach the National Museum in Copenhagen, and in 1921–22 the conservator Gustav Rosenberg opened the site properly. What came out of Hjortspring Mose, a modest bog on the Danish island of Als, was the oldest plank-built boat ever found in Scandinavia: a war canoe more than 19 metres long, carbon-dated to between 381 and 161 BC, lying in the peat with the weapons of a small army heaped around it.
