Lübeck's builders had raised a seven-metre mound of earth on soft ground west of the Trave in 1464 and set a gatehouse on top of it, and the mound was not up to the job. Masons tried to correct the lean as they went, and failed. Over the next four hundred years the whole structure settled a few centimetres a year into the marsh, until the lowest gun ports - openings meant to command the approach road - sat half a metre below the ground they were supposed to be defending.
