That is thirty and a half feet of water — deep enough to submerge a three-storey building — arriving one drop at a time over twelve months, and it stands as the all-time Canadian record. It was not a freak year so much as an emphatic one. Hucuktlis Lake averages 6,903 millimetres annually, roughly 272 inches, which makes this narrow gash of water behind the mountains of Vancouver Island the wettest place in North America. The people who have always known it call it Hucuktlis, pronounced "who chook-tlis," and for a century of maps and bureaucracy it was called something else entirely.
