Igarassu: Introduction

The town is named after a boat. Ygara-usu — great canoe — is what Tupi speakers called the broad channel separating this stretch of the Pernambuco coast from the island of Itamaracá, and the Portuguese took the name of the water for the name of the place. Duarte Coelho Pereira came ashore here in 1535, at the beginning of the Portuguese settlement of Brazil. The church raised that same year still stands above the old centre, and IPHAN, Brazil's national heritage institute, recognises it as the oldest Catholic temple in the country.
