What the honour did not come with was the right to run itself. For the next hundred and fourteen years the market town of Ikaalinen was taxed by the wealthier rural municipality that surrounded it, subsidised back out of those same proceeds, and never once permitted to stand on its own feet. Its population at the end was still under eight hundred people. When independence finally arrived, in 1972, it lasted exactly five years.]]></description>
