You cannot day-trip to Ilha do Caju. That is not a matter of difficulty; it is a rule. Show up at the water's edge in Parnaíba hoping to see the island for an afternoon and you will be turned away, because the reserve does not admit visitors who have not booked at least one night. Getting there means hiring a motor launch and its crew — around R$400 for a boat carrying up to five people — and arranging it as much as five days in advance, often more easily through an agent in Parnaíba than with the island itself. In an era when almost everywhere has been made instantly accessible, one island in the Parnaíba delta has simply declined.
