In 1950 workers were draining a wet field in the short valley of Illerup Ådal, near Skanderborg in East Jutland, when their trenches started turning up iron. What lay under the meadow was the bed of a lake that had covered roughly ten hectares in the Iron Age, and in it, the kit of an army that had lost. Excavations ran from 1950 to 1956 and again from 1975 to 1985, and by the end archaeologists had recovered more than 15,000 objects dating between roughly 200 and 500 AD. Almost none of it was usable when it went into the water. That was the point.
