In the dry months the water drops and a wall of grey gneiss surfaces in the middle of the streambed, forty-six metres long and 3.8 metres high, its face crowded edge to edge with carved shapes. Some resolve into animals. Some look like fruit. Some are recognisably human. A great many are simply forms - spirals, cups, hooked lines, clustered dots - that resemble nothing anyone has been able to name. The Tupi-speaking peoples of the region gave colonisers the word for places like this: itacoatiara, from ita, stone. Written stone. Four centuries later that is still the most accurate description available, because nobody has read a word of it.
