Inishbiggle: Introduction

Photo credit Boholaman at English Wikipedia, Public domain. In 2023 there were eight people living on Inishbiggle. The island is two and a half kilometres long, a kilometre and a half wide, and 650 acres in area - which means that the population density of Inishbiggle, expressed in modern terms, is roughly one person per 80 acres. The school is closed. The post office is closed. The boat across the Bullsmouth Channel from Achill Island takes about ten minutes in good weather and is impossible in bad. The cable car proposed to fix the connection problem has been argued about since 1996 and has been definitively refused. Emergency access is by helicopter. And yet, eight people still call the island home. They are not leaving easily.
