      <description><![CDATA[On the night of 22 October 1707, a British admiral named Sir Cloudesley Shovell sailed his fleet north from Gibraltar in thickening weather and, by his own dead reckoning, believed himself safely out in open water. He was wrong by miles. Just before eight in the evening, his flagship HMS Association struck the rocks off the Isles of Scilly and sank in three or four minutes. Four ships piled onto the cliffs. At least 1,450 men died, including the admiral himself. It remains one of the worst maritime disasters in British history, and it happened because nobody at the time could measure longitude at sea. The Scilly Isles, scarcely more than granite teeth showing above the Atlantic, were where the British Empire learned what ignorance of position truly costs.]]></description>
