The head arrived in pieces. Ninety-five of them. Lev Kerbel's colossal bronze bust of Karl Marx had been cast at the Monument Skulptura art foundry in Leningrad and then broken down for the journey, on the understanding that it would be welded back together on arrival. The Soviet welding technology sent along with it turned out to be unsuitable for the job. So the work went instead to a local enterprise, VEB Germania, and the city assembled its own monument by hand: 7.10 metres of head, more than 13 metres including the granite plinths beneath it, roughly 40 tonnes of bronze. Chemnitz — Karl-Marx-Stadt at the time — had ordered a symbol and ended up building it itself, which is not the least ironic thing about the object.
