If Burkina Faso has a smell of craft, it is here: the worked-hide scent of Kaya, the country's leather capital. A hundred kilometers northeast of Ouagadougou, this mostly Mossi town has built a quiet reputation on what its artisans do with skins. At the front of the grand marché, near the roundabout marked by its white horse, the leatherworkers keep their stalls - bags, belts, sandals, saddlery - turning the hides of the herds that graze the surrounding savanna into goods sold across the region.
