Photo credit Finn Bjorklid, Public domain. The name might mean 'the road to the summit.' Or it might come from Norse and mean 'the champion's mountain.' Or it might describe a tree stump - 'big-trunk, stock, post hill' - that once stood at the corner where the road turned. Etymologists have not settled the question. What Keppel Gate is, beyond dispute, is a 4-to-5 milestone stretch of the A18 Snaefell Mountain Road in the parish of Kirk Onchan, bordered by acid grassland and heather moor, overlooking Baldwin Valley and the brown shoulder of Beinn-y-Phott. It is also one of the most-watched corners on the most-watched road race in the world.
