There was a Kingdom of Murcia for almost six hundred years, and in all that time it never had its own king. The paradox is written into the word itself. When medieval Castilians spoke of a reino, they did not always mean an independent nation with a crowned sovereign. They meant a territory, a jurisdiction, one of the several realms that together made up the Crown of Castile. Murcia was a kingdom in exactly this sense: a named piece of a larger monarchy, real on every map and in every ledger, ruled from afar by a king who wore many such titles at once.
