      <description><![CDATA[On 6 November 1730 a prisoner in the fortress at Küstrin was brought to a window and made to watch his closest friend beheaded in the courtyard below. The prisoner was eighteen years old and named Frederick; he had tried to desert his father's army and flee to England. The friend was Hans Hermann von Katte, a young officer who had helped him plan it. Frederick's father, Frederick William I, wanted the lesson delivered where his son could not look away. Frederick would become Frederick the Great, and the fortress at the junction of the Oder and the Warta became the place where his youth ended. Two hundred and fifteen years later the courtyard, the castle around it, and very nearly the entire town were gone.]]></description>
