Beneath the terraced slopes and lotus-covered ponds of one of Ukraine's oldest arboreta runs a secret the trees have kept for centuries: a network of caves and underground passages, hand-dug by Cossack monks long before the first ornamental sapling was ever planted. The Krasnokutskyi arboretum, in the Bohodukhiv district of Kharkiv Oblast, is often dated to 1793, when a landowning family transformed a religious estate into a botanical garden. But its real story begins more than a hundred years earlier, in the piety and labor of monks who chose this ravine for its seclusion, and whose tunnels still thread the eastern slope where visitors now walk among the trees.
