It began in 1754 as Yelisavetgrad, spent much of the twentieth century as Kirovohrad, and finally became Kropyvnytskyi, named for a founder of Ukrainian theater. The locals reach for a fonder title. They call their home a little Paris, remembering the elegant look the downtown wore before the twentieth century reshaped it, and if you walk the center today you can still catch the ghost of it in ornamented facades, some freshly restored, others patiently waiting their turn.]]></description>
