Kugelbake: Introduction

Photo credit Hombre, CC BY-SA 3.0. For decades, ships feeling their way into the Elbe steered by a clump of trees. Then a storm surge took the trees. The pilots working this coast understood exactly what that meant: with no mark on the point, a master could mistake eighteen kilometres of estuary mouth for open sea, or open sea for the estuary, and either error put a keel on a sandbank. Around December 1703, at the insistence of pilot inspector Paul Allers, a wooden structure went up where the trees had stood. Something has occupied that spot ever since — though never the same thing twice.
