The houses came over the hill. In the closing years of the 19th century James Dunsmuir needed somewhere to settle the families of the men working his coal seams inland, and he chose a sheltered inlet on Vancouver Island's east coast that everyone then called Oyster Harbour. Buildings from Extension and Wellington were taken apart, or jacked up whole and dragged - by rail where there was rail, by oxen where there wasn't - and set down again on the slope above the water. Then in 1900 Dunsmuir renamed the place Ladysmith, marking the relief of a besieged British garrison in South Africa that February during the Second Boer War. The harbour took the new name along with the town. The oysters, which had been there considerably longer than any of it, kept their own counsel.
