In 1969 a German-born psychiatrist with a white beard and a talent for provocation left California and moved to a logging town on Vancouver Island. Fritz Perls, co-founder of Gestalt therapy and one of the more magnetic figures of the human potential movement, had been running workshops at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur. What he wanted next was something he called a Gestalt kibbutz: a place where people would live together and work on themselves full time rather than dropping in for a weekend. He chose Lake Cowichan. Around thirty of his followers came north with him. Less than a year later he was dead, and the commune dissolved - but for a few months, a mill town of a few thousand people was one of the stranger addresses in psychotherapy.
