Lapa Terra Ronca: Introduction

The name Terra Ronca means roaring earth, and that is not poetry, it is a description: the Lapa River comes down off the Serra Geral and vanishes into the hillside, and the ground above it growls. Then you round the last of the scrub and the growl gets an explanation. The cave mouth is 96 metres high and 120 metres wide, a limestone arch that would swallow a thirty-storey building, cut into a wall of grey rock in the far northeast of Goias about 400 kilometres from Brasilia. People stand in that entrance and look small in a way that photographs never quite capture, because the thing that makes it overwhelming is not the width. It is the height of the ceiling and the fact that the river keeps talking the whole time you are under it.
