The clothes were the whole point. Short leather trousers and braces for the boys, dark skirts and checked blouses for the girls, white knee socks and hiking boots for everyone, and now and then a red neckerchief or a small badge stamped BJ, for Bündische Jugend. Every element was borrowed from the socialist and communist youth clubs the Nazis had shut down, and every element announced, at a glance on a Leipzig pavement, that the wearer was not in the Hitler Youth.
