The Lüneburg Heath looks like the last wild corner of northern Germany - open, treeless, going purple in late August - but the trees were taken off it by prehistoric farmers, the soil is thin because those same farmers and their livestock stripped it, and if the sheep stopped grazing tomorrow the birch and pine would be back within a generation. The heath is a ruin that turned beautiful. It lies on the North German Plain roughly between Hanover, Hamburg and Wolfsburg, and it is one of the few landscapes in Europe that has to be actively prevented from healing.
