From the road, Maidanetske looks like a thousand other villages in the Ukrainian countryside: a scatter of houses on a hill, a district hospital, fields of grain and sunflowers rolling toward the Tal'ianki River. What you cannot see is what lies beneath the topsoil. Nearly six thousand years ago, before the pyramids of Egypt, before the first cities of Mesopotamia had reached their full size, one of the largest human settlements anywhere in the world stood on this ground. It left almost nothing above the surface. Its story had to be read magnetically, from the faint iron signatures its burned houses pressed into the soil, mapped house by house across the fields where cattle now graze.
