A large part of the spit is midden — shell, bone, charcoal and fire-cracked rock, compacted layer on layer, the accumulated residue of meals eaten on this beach across a span of time no plaque attempts to summarize. A provincial park covers the ground now. A trading post and a post office stood nearby, and the name on every chart and ferry schedule belongs to a Shetlander who arrived in the 1880s. The ground itself keeps a considerably older record, written in broken clamshell.
