The hamlet that grew up here in the late Middle Ages built a parish church in 1400 dedicated to St Mary, and the Anglo-Saxon word burna — a small stream — gave the church and then the village its full name: St Mary-le-bourne, eventually elided into Marylebone. The village wanted distance from the place it had been previously identified with. About 900 metres south of the new church stood the Tyburn gallows, where for centuries London had carried out its most public executions. The villagers chose the church and the stream over the gallows, and the name stuck.]]></description>
