The archaeologists who found one of Eastern Europe's most remarkable ancient sites were children. In 2004, on a marlstone ridge near Perevalsk in eastern Ukraine, schoolchildren at a summer archaeology camp began uncovering something no one expected: a complex of stone mounds and stepped terraces that turned out to be a temple and burial ground roughly five thousand years old - older than the Great Pyramid of Giza. Their teacher, Vladimir Paramonov of Alchevsk, had been bringing students to dig on these hills since 1995, patient year after patient year. What his young diggers had stumbled onto would, when announced in 2006, force scholars to reconsider what the herders and farmers of this steppe were capable of building.
