The name has been amusing English speakers for a very long time, and Middelfart has long since made its peace with that. In Danish it means nothing of the kind. Written down as Mæthælfar in Valdemar's Census Book in 1231, it joins the old Danish mæthal, 'middle', to far, 'way' — the middle crossing. And it described the water before it described the town. Snævringen, 'the narrowing', is the point where the Little Belt squeezes to its slimmest and Funen leans closest to Jutland. Almost everything about this place follows from that gap.
