Everything here started on somebody else's runway. From 1952 to 1957 the B.C. Custom Car Association ran drag races on unused pavement at Abbotsford Airport, timing quarter-miles between the movements of actual aircraft. The Sports Car Club of British Columbia used the same runways for road racing. Neither club owned anything. Both spent the next four decades chasing land - losing it, litigating over it, losing it again - and both ended up, improbably, on the same low shelf of Fraser River floodplain six miles north of the airport where they began. Mission Raceway Park is what happens when amateur racers refuse, across three generations, to be told there is nowhere left to race.
