Montblanc: Introduction

Photo credit Till F. Teenck, CC BY-SA 2.5. Every April, Catalonia gives roses and books to the people it loves, in honor of a saint who killed a dragon. And in Montblanc, they will tell you this is where he did it. According to the legend the Catalans have cherished for centuries, a dragon once terrorized the town, its hunger appeased by a grim lottery of victims, until the lot fell at last to the king's own daughter. As the princess waited at the gates, a knight named Jordi, Saint George, rode the dragon down and ran it through, and from the pool of its blood sprang a rosebush in full bloom. Whether or not a dragon ever menaced these ramparts, Montblanc wears the story proudly. It is a town that has always understood the value of a good legend, and the value of a good wall.
