Photo credit August Wilhelm Ferdinand Schirmer, Public domain. In February 1826 Hermann von Pückler-Muskau and his wife Lucie were divorced, and the reason entered in the record was childlessness. The real reason was a garden. Pückler had been building an enormous landscape park around his castle on the Neisse since 1815 and was running out of money for it, and the divorce had been Lucie's own suggestion - it freed him to go abroad and marry a fortune. That September he sailed for England and spent the better part of two years hunting for an heiress. He found none. The English press treated the search as a joke and printed as much. He came home without a bride but with a manuscript, and the park he had been trying to pay for is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site with an international border running down the middle of it.
