The car bomb failed. That should have been the end of it. On 16 September 1991, in the small town of Mutxamel just north of Alicante, the Basque separatist group ETA sent a driverless car loaded with explosives rolling toward the local Civil Guard barracks - and it missed, veering off and crashing harmlessly into the wall of a nearby bank. But a bomb that does not explode on schedule is still a bomb. The police, seeing only an abandoned vehicle, had it towed to a car pound. There it detonated, killing three men who had nothing to do with the fight it belonged to.
