The station at Namsskogan opened on 5 July 1940. Hold that date against the calendar: German forces had invaded Norway on 9 April, resistance on the mainland had collapsed the previous month, and the country was under occupation. The rails reaching this island village in the middle of the Namsen were not a liberation or a gift — they were a Norwegian project, approved by parliament in 1923 and under construction north from Grong since 1932, that the occupying army suddenly found extremely useful. A line running north through Norway's long empty middle is a strategic object. The village got its station in the summer everything else went wrong.
