Ice closes over all 256 square kilometres of Näsijärvi, and a track opens from the Tampere shore out to Siilinkari, a low rocky islet with a lighthouse on it and, in winter, a café. People ski out. People walk out with Nordic poles, or with nothing at all, in ordinary coats, across water that in August carries passenger boats. It is the most popular walking destination on the lake, and part of the appeal is simply that you can stand there, well offshore, on top of a lake that runs to sixty-five metres deep, holding a coffee.]]></description>
