National Museum of the American Indian: Introduction

Photo credit Geraldshields11, CC BY-SA 4.0. On September 21, 2004, around 20,000 American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian people gathered on the National Mall - the largest gathering of Indigenous people in Washington's history. Senator Daniel Inouye of Hawaii, who had introduced the legislation that created the National Museum of the American Indian fifteen years earlier, spoke at the opening. The museum had been designed by Canadian Blackfoot architect Douglas Cardinal, with Cherokee/Choctaw architect Johnpaul Jones contributing design work, and Donna House (Diné/Oneida) supervising the landscape architecture. Native Americans had filled the leadership positions in the design, the construction, and the operation of the museum. The result was a building unlike any other on the Mall - a five-story, 250,000-square-foot curvilinear form clad in golden Kasota limestone, designed to evoke natural rock formations shaped by wind and water over millennia. It had taken 82 years - since George Gustav Heye's Museum of the American Indian opened in New York in 1922 - to arrive on the National Mall.
