Naval Museum Complex Balaklava: Introduction

No map acknowledged the tunnel mouth hidden in the cliff at the edge of Balaklava Bay, and the town that grew up around it was closed even to Soviet citizens without a permit. Behind a camouflaged door thick enough to shrug off a direct nuclear strike lay a full submarine base, hollowed out of Mount Tavros itself. Sailors could sail a boat in from the sea, seal the mountain behind them, refit and rearm, and slip back out without a single satellite ever glimpsing the vessel.
