It stands on a three-square-kilometre island roughly 120 kilometres downstream from the city centre and thirteen kilometres northwest of Cuxhaven, surrounded twice daily by open water and twice daily by nothing at all. Neuwerk is a quarter of Hamburg in the same administrative sense that any city district is, with a school and a postcode and twenty-one registered residents at the end of 2024. Getting there involves either a boat or a horse.
