The residents were not consulted and did not care for the result. For ninety years the place had answered to Ngã Bảy - the Seven-Way Intersection - named for the junction where seven canals converge into one wide brown star of water, and for the floating market that grew up on top of it. The objections were loud enough to register. In late 2006 the town was formally renamed Ngã Bảy. As administrative history goes this is a footnote, and it is also the rarest sort of civic victory: a name handed back to the people who actually use it.
