Photo credit Reclus, CC0. The volunteer fire brigade of Wewelsburg parks its engines in the camp kitchen. There are apartments in the same building. The gatehouse, where prisoners were counted in and out, is a two-family house now, and a housing estate covers most of the rest - lawns, driveways, hedges, the ordinary furniture of a German village. Nothing in the ground announces what it was. Between 1939 and 1945 roughly 3,900 people were held here and set to work rebuilding a castle for Heinrich Himmler, and almost a third of them did not survive it. The recorded deaths number 1,285. The castle stands a few hundred metres away, restored, with a youth hostel in it.
