Nizhyn: Introduction

Photo credit Andriy Grechylo, Public domain. Every fifth person you pass in Nizhyn is a student, and one of them, two centuries ago, was a restless, homesick teenager named Nikolai Gogol. He studied at the town's lyceum, filled notebooks with the strange characters that would fill his stories, and left for St. Petersburg to become one of the great writers of the age. His statue still stands on a Nizhyn street. But Gogol is only one thread in a town whose past runs improbably deep for its size, a Cossack trading center on the Oster River where Greek merchants, Baroque church builders, and a famously prized cucumber all left their mark.
