Stoerre Vaerie. That is what this range is called in South Sámi, and in 2015 a young director named Amanda Kernell used the name as the title of a short film. The film went to Sundance, and it grew into a feature — Sameblod, released the following year and shot partly in these same fells — about a fourteen-year-old Sámi girl in 1930s Sweden who is measured, photographed and told what she is by the state that governs her. The mountains kept their name through all of it. Norra Storfjället, the northern great fell, is the roof of Västerbotten County: a compact sub-range of the Scandinavian Mountains, mostly inside the largest nature reserve in Sweden, cut cleanly in two by a valley that people travel a long way to walk through.
