North Fork Sol Duc Shelter: Introduction

Fourteen feet by ten, open across the entire front, a frame of peeled logs sheathed in vertical split-fir boards with a gabled roof that breaks partway down into a shed extension - the North Fork Sol Duc Shelter was never built for comfort. It was built to be dry. On the western flank of the Olympic Peninsula, where the forest measures rain in feet rather than inches and the moss on a hemlock trunk holds water like a sponge, dry is the only luxury that counts. A U.S. Forest Service crew raised this one around 1932. Nearly a century later it is still standing, still open on the front, still furnished with bunks, and still offering the same spare bargain to anyone who walks far enough to find it: a roof, three walls, and bare ground to sleep on.
