A colonial house in a town of fewer than sixteen thousand people, in the interior of Ceará, contains a museum of the region's Indigenous past, a library, a theatre and a restaurant. The unusual part is who runs it. The Fundação Casa Grande – Memorial do Homem Kariri opened in December 1992, founded by the archaeologist Rosiane Limaverde and Alemberg Quindins in a house dating from the era when the Cariri economy ran on leather. Its declared business is not entertaining children but training them: the educational and cultural formation of children and young people as protagonists in cultural management, in the foundation's own phrase. Over three decades that has meant successive cohorts of Nova Olinda kids learning a collection, an archive and a stage from the inside — and then handing them to the cohort behind.
