Photo credit Htawmonzel, CC BY-SA 4.0. In 1282, King Eric V of Denmark, known as Erik Klipping, put his seal to a document that took power away from him. He had offended the nobility so thoroughly that they were in a position to demand it. The charter he signed, the håndfæstning of 1282, is remembered in Denmark as the country's first constitution, and the genre it launched has often been called a Scandinavian parallel to England's Magna Carta. He signed it at Nyborg, in a moated castle in the middle of Funen, which is to say in the middle of the kingdom.
